With nearly 200 registered breeds—either in one of the seven Variety Groups or as part of the Miscellaneous Class—the American Kennel Club is the world’s largest purebred-dog registry and the governing body for the canine sport in the United States.

For someone looking to add a purebred canine companion to their life—or for the all-around purebred-dog enthusiast—Meet the Breeds presents the most current AKC information. Meet two new Miscellaneous breeds, the Barbet and the Kooikerhondje, and learn about the transition from the Miscellaneous Class to full recognition for six other breeds. Fanciers are sure to learn something interesting about their favorite breeds while meeting plenty of new and intriguing furry faces!

The spectacular “AKC Meet the Breeds” event was launched by the American Kennel Club in New York City in 2009. Its resounding success led to the event becoming an annual attraction as well as to the publication of this official guide. Winner of the 2017 Dog Writers Association of America Best Club Special Publication, The American Kennel Club’s Meet the Breeds presents 198 dog breeds, all either currently recognized by the AKC or part of the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class.

Authorized by the AKC and completely up to date, this colorful publication is the ideal puppy buyer’s guide, encapsulating all the information a potential owner needs about each breed in one handy resource. The decision to bring a purebred puppy or dog into your home is both exciting and challenging, and the process should never be undertaken without careful research and consideration. Meet the Breeds is the best place to start your search for the right purebred dog for you and your family.

Inside, you’ll find an introduction to each of the groups and a discussion of common traits shared by group members; listings of AKC dog breeds, including each breed’s history and description, temperament, size, coat, color, life expectancy, activity level, grooming and exercise requirements, healthcare, and parent-club and rescue-group contact information; colorful photographs of adult dogs and puppies of each breed; important considerations for potential owners; and a comprehensive glossary defining over 1,000 terms related to dog breeds and dog shows. The 198 breed profiles are organized alphabetically and color-coded by group for ease of use.

Whether you’ve got your heart set on the tallest breed, the Irish Wolfhound; the tiniest breed, the Chihuahua; the fascinating Xoloitzcuintli; America’s favorite, the Labrador Retriever; the laid-back Bulldog; the lively and intelligent Border Collie; the gentle Saluki; or something in between, you’ll find accurate, reliable information in the pages of Meet the Breeds!

  6. Carefully Scrutinized

    Not enough information
Was hoping for more information on each dog. This book is smallish in size and only offers a brief one page description on each dog. Like a glorified pamphlet. Will be looking for something more comprehensive as my gift recipient really likes to learn a lot about each dog & this book is seriously lacking.

    Great value
I got this to replace a 30 year old AKC book my dad had. The actual modern edition of that book is almost $40, and so I saw this and decided to order it instead. It’s alphabetical and gives a whole page to each breed, with information and color photos of adults and puppies. The breeds are also color coded to signify which breed group it is in and has some introductory information. Great value and seems like a nice gift for any purebred dog enthusiast.

    Somewhat repetitive regarding breed descriptions
It’s obvious that there is a reluctance by the author to enhance the downsides of the more inherently aggressive breeds. In my view, there are breeds that “generally” are not suitable in families with small children. I don’t think that this publication adequately addresses that subject with statistical data or even an opinion.
