A Compact Marvel in Lens Technology
I recently purchased the Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G lens and it has exceeded all my expectations. Its ultra-compact design, weighing just 173g, makes it incredibly convenient for both professional and recreational photography. The high-quality G Lens optical design with three aspherical elements ensures impeccable sharpness and corner-to-corner resolution, a true testament to Sony’s craftsmanship.The F2.5 aperture is perfect for low-light conditions, providing excellent light gathering capabilities. Compact lens. Compact package
I really wanted this lens, mainly because I went with mirrorless for size, among other things. And this pairs so nicely with my a7c. Iâve owned a Samyang 35mm f2.8 for a few months now. Itâs small and compact, but probably a tad too small and for some reason I canât quite explain, I havenât really loved the pictures. Maybe just not as much as I had hoped. So I decided to upgrade and naturally spend 3 times the money for something .23 times better. Letâs be honest for just a sec. isnât that what photography is usually all about? Oh well. I just took it out the box, slapped it on my a7c and it looks beautiful. Yes the hood is a bit awkward but thatâs expected, they wanted it to be compact so Iâm ok with it. The aperture ring is solid. Itâs not gonna move around accidentally. I was quite worried about that. It feels a lot like my 20mm f1.8 but half the size. And itâs not as small as I was imagining, but itâs still great. Prob the perfect size. Iâve taken just a few pictures so far and itâs stunning. I can def notice the difference from my samyang. Auto focus is superb. Man I love Sony mirrorless.I struggled for a month decided if I should move forward with this lens. I really wanted a 35mm (trying to sell my Samyang right now). But I do also own a 28mmf2 so I think between that lens and this one (40mm) Iâm good.Im not a pro. Just a major hobby Iâve invested way too much money in. So take it with a grain a salt but I felt there should be a review on Amazon just in case you canât find any of the 16 reviews online or 16 YouTube reviews on this lens.Overall itâs tough to justify if you have a 35mm you love. Like a sigma f2 (ugh. I ended up picking this one over that one and I hope I donât regret it) or the Sony 1.8 or 1.4. I guess if you really want something slightly more compact than those. Or if you just donât own a 35mm maybe this one is a good alternative for you. (Again if you truly like the idea of a solid compact lens).For reference Iâm able to fit it with my camera in my 5L peak design bag along with my 28mmF2 and my tamron 70-180. I always appreciate people providing that type of info so I hope someone else can appreciate this. Iâd also easily be able to include my 55mm zeiss and 20mm f1.8 if I remove the tamron. Just FYI. Itâs quite convenient to have a compact package. Not saying all my packages are compact. But not denying it either.

Most versatile of the Sony compacts.
Great images quality and compact size. Images have a snap that even some larger, pricier options donât have. The 40mm focal length is actually far more useful for travel than the classic 50mm ânormalâ lens. With the high resolution Sonys, you can crop to your heartâs content. if you want that slightly wider view. My A7CR wears this lens most of the time.

Good things do come in small packages
Nice travel lens for my A7C ii. It has excellent sharpness and depth of field regardless of size actually. 40mm is a fun focal length putting it close to 35mm. My only gripe is the LoCA is very bad in some situations, to point it may be difficult to save the pic in light room. Most cases it works well though. Great to pair with the 24mm, perfect travel companion.

Surprised with “good” quality from Amazon Warehouse
I bought second hand from Amazon warehouse, and expected some scratches on the body. It came without the original packaging, but the condition is like new. No sign of usage. Lens quality is great. Sharp, focuses fast, silent, great build quality.

Incredible Sony Quality
This is an outstanding lens by Sony. What stands out is its build quality, size, and image sharpness. I also love having the aperture ring on the outside of such a tiny lens.The only unfortunate thing about this lens is that it’s only an f2.5, but that’s only because I prefer the fastest primes. But honestly, f2.5 is more than adequate for 95% of my work.I love this lens in particular for street photography. 40mm is slightly tighter than 35mm but I think it’s enjoyable.

Excellent quality lens. The size is just perfect and the build quality is amazing. I really like the fact that this lens has an aperture ring and it clicks nicely in place. There’s a button that allows the aperture to ring to be “clickless” – great for video work.Sharpness is fantastic, even wide open. Close up distance is also very good and comes in handy. At close up distances, things are a little soft at max aperture but sharpens up perfectly at F4.The included lens hood is a nifty design – it’s small and doesn’t get in the way.Very pleased overall.
