Do yourself a favor and pass on these trash headphones. The poor quality headband and “condensation gate” issue should be a dealbreaker enough to pass on these headphones entirely. They are not worth your consideration. The sound quality, ANC, and transparency features are great, but there are critical design flaws that simply cannot be ignored at that $500+ price point.
Google “condensation gate” and you will understand why these headphones don’t deserve your hard earned money. Moisture and electronics doesn’t mix. Why on earth would you waste money on a product that has a high likelihood of shorting out soon after the warranty expires?
The headband. I can’t even believe they poorly designed such a critical piece of the product. The headband’s support system is made out of (wait for it) MESH!!!!! Think about that folks. All that’s keeping the metal frame of the headphones from painfully resting DIRECTLY on your head is a very thin layer of mesh of which over time begins to sag, and when it does, the consumer instantly goes from having pain in their wallet, to pain on their head as well. I cannot for the life of me understand why they would have designed the headband with such a flimsy support system.
Comfort is a serious issue as well. The clamping force coupled with the sheer weight of the headphones is straight up ridiculous. I do not recommend these headphones at all. Not to mention the returns process is PAINFUL. I can only imagine that Apple makes it that way to discourage returns in general for products purchased through AMZ. You could potentially have to wait up to 30 days to get a refund due to Apple’s requirements to return this particular product.

I had a pair of the Bose quite comfort that I used for years. These sound much better and the build quality is amazing. Price is high but they are a quality pair of headphones that integrate perfectly with a Mac desktop, iPad and iPhone. The instrument separation when listening to music is much better than the Bose. I have not used them on a flight yet but the noise canceling works really well. I use them everyday for hours while working and plug them in at night. After a full day of use they only use 30% of the battery. I am glad I bought them.

10/10 sound quality
10/10 noise cancellation
10/10 comfortability
10/10 durability
The sound quality surpassed my expectations when watching shows or listening to music. Everything is crispy and clear! Noise cancellation is great, but do keep in mind that if the environment is really loud, you may still hear a bit of it through the headphones. It doesn’t bug me too much and helps brings some peace and quiet when necessary. When first receiving the headphones, wearing them cause a bit of soreness cuz I felt like my head was being squished. After wearing them for long periods of time, you kind of break them in and they will become more comfortable that you don’t even notice them. Prior to owning the AirPods Max, I owned that AirPods Pros and they were uncomfortable after a few hours of wears. When comparing the two, the Max is definitely the best overall. Every single day I’ll pack them in my bag for work and they’ve held up! Durability is definitely there, and tbh there’s really no need to purchase an extra case since it gets really bulky. I had purchased a case only to never use it unless I feel like it’s necessary to be used.
Its worth the investment!

Finally, from April 2, 2025, Apple offers hi-res audio with a USB-C cable connected to your device and headphones. Make sure you have the latest software update. It’s also recommended to purchase AppleCare as it’s an expensive headphone compared to others with Active Noise Cancellation. Yes, you’re paying a premium, but they are built very well.
It took a few days to appreciate the sound quality of the headphones. It’s excellent, and I recommend it if you’re already in the Apple ecosystem. The sounds are pretty neutral, with some lovely sub-bass, but not strong and overpowering. However, it is not great for wearing outside as condensation builds up in the ear cups; it is better for home use. If you need to use a gym and want to stay within Apple products, then the Airbuds Pro 2 are the way to go.
Finally, wearing the headphones gets more comfortable over time. My head is not big, but the clamping force is considerable, at least on my unit. Many users recommend stretching the headphone band out and holding it for 30 seconds. The hefty band is made of flexible stainless steel tubing. Once the cups no longer touch each other and there’s some daylight between them, you know the clamping force is not as strong, and of course, you can adjust more if needed. This works well and was my solution, as I considered returning them.
Everything else works flawlessly, including connectivity. That’s not bad for a headphone that’s been out for about four to five years—this model was updated last year with USB-C but is the same headphone as the original—and now, of course, it can listen to lossless audio.

I’ve owned the Bose QC series, Sony WH1000XM3 & M4’s, Bowers & Wilkins Px8, Panda. The Apple AirPod Max are the best, in terms of clarity and soundstage, I’ve tried so far. I also owned a pair of Sennheiser HD 800s – these are wired, but the AirPod Max is the only wireless headphone had even approaches the HD 800 in audio soundstage and overall quality. To note, I do use Apple Music, so I’m sure this only adds to why the AirPod Max’s sound so good.
The Max’s are a bit hefty, but by design, are well balanced – the result is a solid headphone is quite comfortable (I’ve worn them on a 9 hour flight with no issues).
I have to admit that when the return window came, I found that I couldn’t live without these.
