, Delivering high-performance for professional photographers as well as inheriting the optics of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS III model, the RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM is the go-to choice to help capture superb shots of sports, wildlife and more. Its optical image stabilization system with up to 5.5 stops* of shake correction, including three IS operation modes, helps to deliver sharp results – whether hand-held or mounted on a monopod. For brilliantly clear results even in challenging situations, Super Spectra Coatings (SSC) and Air Sphere Coatings (ASC) help minimize ghosting and flare. The RF400mm F2.8 L IS USM is also compatible with both the RF 1.4x and 2x Extenders to get you even closer to the subject.

Surprised it wasn’t the new model
First off I do love the quality of pictures the lens takes BUT since this unit was the same price across numerous platforms I expected it to be the newest model which weighs significantly less than this older model does. I probably should have purchased direct from Canon but I took advantage of the 0% finance option which if I had it to do all over again I would make sure to buy direct so I got the newest version of this lens. Just disappointed that Amazon is selling a lens that is a few years older for the same amount as the newest version cost.

Super sharp, super fast, super telephoto
I bought this lens to work alongside the rf800 f/5.6 I already own. Itâs the perfect compliment and allows me to capture wildlife that is too close for the 800. The low light capabilities are perfect for wildlife photographers shooting in golden light during dawn or dusk, or on days with poor light. Itâs the sharpest of the Canon âbig whitesâ. Even when using the RF extenders the performance is exceptional. Itâs much lighter than the older EF versions of the lens, and hand holding is fairly easy (although I wouldnât want to do it all day :-)). While optically similar to the EF version 3, the RF model gets the edge by giving you an extra half stop of IS over the EF versionâ¦and there is no comparison when it comes to the speed at which it acquires and focuses due to the much faster 12 contact point interface on the mirrorless platform. There is also no comparison when using the extenders. The RF performs much better with both the 1.4x and 2.0x RF extenders than the EF models ever did. There is no noticeable difference in speed when using the RF extenders, and the images are still extremely sharp. I own the RF 400 f/2.8, the RF 800 f/5.6, and the EF 600 f/4. All are excellent lenses, but this one is the sharpest and fastest by far.
