HP Victus 15.6 i5 Gaming PC Review

Introduction

I’ve been on the hunt for a gaming laptop that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg but still packs a punch, and the HP Victus 15.6 i5 Gaming PC caught my eye. With a 144Hz display, a solid Intel i5 processor, an RTX 3050 GPU, and some seriously generous memory and storage, it seemed like a steal. After putting it through its paces—gaming, working, and everything in between—I’m ready to spill the beans on how it holds up. Let’s dive in!

Design and Build Quality

First impressions matter, and the Victus doesn’t disappoint. It’s got a sleek, understated look with a performance blue finish that’s stylish without being over-the-top. Weighing in at about 5 pounds, it’s not the lightest laptop around, but it feels sturdy and well-built. The plastic chassis isn’t fancy, but it’s tough enough to handle being tossed in a backpack. I also dig the thin bezels around the screen—they make it feel modern and keep the focus on the display. Plus, with extras like an SD card reader and HDMI port, it’s got all the connectivity I need for my gadgets.

Display: 15.6″ FHD 1920×1080 144Hz

The 15.6-inch Full HD screen is a total game-changer. With a 1920×1080 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate, everything looks crisp and moves like silk. I fired up Overwatch and couldn’t believe how smooth it felt—those extra frames really make a difference in fast-paced action. Colors are vibrant for an IPS panel, though it’s not the brightest display (maybe 250-300 nits), so it’s best kept indoors. Still, for gaming and streaming, this screen is a delight—I’ve caught myself staring at it longer than I probably should.

Processor: Intel Core i5-12450H

Under the hood, the Intel Core i5-12450H is a beast for a mid-range chip. This 12th-gen processor has 8 cores and 12 threads, and it handles multitasking like a champ. I had a dozen browser tabs open, a video rendering in the background, and Genshin Impact running, and it didn’t even break a sweat. For everyday tasks like writing or editing photos, it’s overkill in the best way. It’s not a top-tier i7 or i9, but for the price, this little powerhouse gets the job done and then some.

Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 is the star of the gaming show here. It’s an entry-level GPU, but don’t let that fool you—it’s got some serious chops. I tested Call of Duty: Warzone on medium settings and averaged 60 FPS, which is plenty playable. Lighter games like League of Legends soared past 100 FPS, taking full advantage of that 144Hz screen. Ray tracing is on the table too, but it’s a bit of a stretch—Shadow of the Tomb Raider with ray tracing on dipped to 30-40 FPS unless I tweaked other settings. For budget gamers, though, this GPU is a sweet spot.

Memory: 32GB RAM

Here’s where things get wild: 32GB of RAM. That’s more than most people need, and I love it. Switching between heavy apps, running virtual machines, or keeping a million tabs open—it handles it all without a hiccup. For gaming, it’s future-proofing at its finest; I won’t need to upgrade this anytime soon. Honestly, 16GB would’ve been fine, but 32GB feels like a luxury I didn’t know I wanted until I had it.

Storage: 1TB SSD

The 1TB SSD is another win. Games load in seconds, and my system boots up faster than I can grab a coffee—under 10 seconds from cold start to desktop. With a terabyte of space, I’ve got room for my entire Steam library, plus all my work files and random downloads. It’s fast, spacious, and makes me wonder why I ever put up with smaller drives. No need for external storage here—this thing’s got me covered.

Keyboard: Backlit KB

The backlit keyboard is a small but awesome detail. The white glow is bright enough for late-night gaming sessions without being distracting, and the keys have a nice, tactile feel. It’s not mechanical, but it’s comfy for typing long reviews like this one (ha!). I wish it had RGB options for extra flair, but for a budget laptop, this is more than good enough.

Touchpad

The touchpad is surprisingly great—large, smooth, and responsive. I usually plug in a mouse for gaming, but for casual browsing or editing, it’s a solid performer. Gestures like two-finger scrolling work flawlessly, and it doesn’t feel cheap or clunky like some budget laptop touchpads I’ve tried.

Additional Features: SD Card Reader, Webcam, HDMI

The extras really round out the package. The SD card reader is a lifesaver for transferring photos from my camera, and the HDMI port makes it easy to hook up to my TV for a bigger screen. The webcam is a basic 720p deal—nothing to write home about, but it’s fine for Zoom calls or streaming with friends. Wi-Fi 6 is a nice bonus too; my connection stays fast and stable even in a crowded house.

Performance and Cooling

Overall performance is a standout. The combo of the i5, RTX 3050, and 32GB RAM makes this a versatile machine—I’ve gamed, edited videos, and worked on it without any major hiccups. Cooling is handled by dual fans, and while it gets warm during intense sessions, it never feels like it’s struggling. The fans kick up a bit of noise, but it’s not obnoxious—more of a low hum than a roar.

Battery Life

Battery life is the one weak spot. Unplugged, I get about 4-5 hours of light use (think Netflix or browsing), but gaming drains it in an hour or two. It’s not a surprise for a gaming laptop, but it means I keep the charger close. For me, it’s a desk warrior anyway, so it’s not a dealbreaker.

Final Thoughts

The HP Victus 15.6 i5 Gaming PC is a budget gem. It’s not perfect—battery life could be better, and the RTX 3050 won’t max out every new AAA title—but for the price (probably $800-$1000), it’s an absolute steal. Whether you’re a casual gamer, a student, or just someone who wants a fast, reliable laptop, this thing delivers. It’s earned a spot as my go-to machine, and I’m betting it’d do the same for you.

Excellent computer, so much faster than my old one. I don’t have mush to compare it to but it can run pretty new games just fine.

Runs the stuff I play, and does schoolwork really well. I play counter strike at 60fps and rocket league at 144, can’t complain with the performance. Only gripe is the battery life when gaming, it depletes within an hour or two if not constantly plugged in while gaming at high frames.

It really is a nice laptop. I’ve had it for over a month and have had zero issues. To everyone complaining that the laptop must be used because the warranty already started, this is from the HP website:

“The warranty date in the system you see online starts from when HP sells the product to a major distributor or when the PC gets out of the factory. Since you didn’t order directly from HP factory but from a local store, you see a difference because HP cannot know exactly when you purchase it.

There is a process to dispute the warranty”

The computer works great as a gaming computer, I’ve been able to run very high games on it such as Elden Ring and Skyrim. The only downside is its low battery life but that’s to be expected if you’re running games on it. Overall very worth it, would recommend it!

I’ve been a customer on Amazon for over 20 years and this is one of the worst experiences I’ve had on Amazon. I’m extremely disappointed with this purchase. The laptop I purchased was supposed to be NEW, but it’s clearly used. I checked the warranty with HP, and it had been activated on Dec 17th, 2024 – I received the laptop on Feb 7th, 2025. The box also had a sticker placed over the computer specs to read as 1TB SSD—32GB RAM. Underneath, it had the official specs which said 8GB RAM and 512GB hard drive. If the hardware were changed, the warranty is void – meaning if something happens to this laptop I won’t be able to get the warranty benefits. The seller is engaging in deceptive practices. I honestly suggest against purchasing this laptop here and going elsewhere, preferably in-store. This was an extremely expensive purchase for me and I’m very disappointed.
