Optical perfection realized
I had high expectations for this lens and I have not been disappointed. Optically, it is mostly perfect, and the detail in the images show extreme resolution. This lens is so sharp it can resolve the wrinkles in a birds skin near their eyes from a distance of fifty feet or more. I use this lens primarily for wildlife photography in Florida. Without using this lens, it is difficult to grasp how well this lens resolves distant images.The big downside, other than the obviously high pricetag, is that it is a bit heavy to carry into the field, but this is nothing that a bit of planning can’t mediate. A minor downside is that with such a long lens, some moving subjects will be too close to fit into the frame from time to time.I would advise anyone seriously considering this lens to just go for it and don’t look back.

I used this lens for more than a year and …
I used this lens for more than a year and it worked perfectly well. On my last trip, unfortunately I dropped the lens, with the enclosed teleconverter and my new D5 and the teleconverter broke and I had to discard it. I contacted Nikon Support asking them where to buy another teleconverter, and all I got from them (and the vendor also) was this message: “Unfortunately the AF-S Teleconverter TC800-1.25E ED is currently unavailable for individual sale and we are unable to advise on where the item can be purchased from”Can you image buying a ver expensive lens and not being able to get an essential spare part?

This lens will take your peeping tom game to a whole new level!
I mean, just look at this lens. You can tell by looking at it that it will take your peeping tom game to a whole new level.No longer will you be limited to your immediate neighbors. If there’s someone several houses down that you’ve been meaning to get “better acquainted” with, this lens will help you accomplish that.When you first start walking around with this lens, people will ask if that’s a new lens on your camera, or if you’re just happy to see them.When you’re not peeping at your unsuspecting neighbors, this also works as a great wildlife lens. Let’s say you’re deep in the forest getting some great shots of rare birds, when…uh oh! How did that angry grizzly bear get behind you!? Not a problem. This lens also doubles as a two-handed melee weapon. After a few violent swings and a mouthful of lens hood, that grizzly will run off frightened for its life, while you casually turn back around and resume taking photos.And if your peeping winds you up in jail, you can simply sell or pawn the lens for bail money. This lens is self-sustaining that way.

You get what you pay for…
Don’t listen to the other hating comments, you get what you pay for. The price for this product is perfect considering what it is for. If you are a professional photographer 16K is nothing, we make that in a single wedding or bar mitzvah. This lens will make a difference of you selling a cats picture for $5 or $50K. I take pictures of cats all day, and so far nothing can beat this lens. It has such a great zoom and autofocus that it will capture a single milk dropping on the cute cats whiskers when the cat is at the highest point of the burning tree.And let’s not even talk about how it makes you look alike a straight up G, i even got arrested once when i tried to photograph the president and secret service though i was a sniper. #straightuppantydropperHere is a picture of a cat i took when i was on top of the Eiffel tower, the cat was all the way in Rome.

Go big or go home
My boyfriend has a 200 mm. I know, face palm. And I have to walk beside him in the field, and be seen with a man walking around with that puny thing as if shame doesn’t exist. What am I, a chooch? I’m sick and tired of his artful landscapes; I wanna see God’s nose hairs, and this baby’s gonna bring it. Must have; I may not be able to pay my property taxes the next few years, but it’ll take a while for them to padlock me out, what with all the red tape. It’s more important my guy have this cannon bouncing against his thigh before he gets too old to hoist it onto his crap tripod. No one’s looking at the tripod with this baby commanding attention, besides, gotta leave a few Washington in the wallet for extra large lens wipes.

Maxed out two VISA credit cards to get this lens. Best photography purchase ever!Nikon D800, $3,000. Nikon 800mm f/5.6 VR, $18,000. The look of terror on a client’s face when you point this epic lens at them for portraits, priceless.

New Lens or New Car?
You can purchase this lens and walk to your next shooting location, or purchase a car and drive there. With the same amount of money, you can only do one or the other. Even still, this is by far the creme de la creme of lenses for DSLRs IMO. Worth the investment if you’re in a field of work where you absolutely need the lens (safari photography comes to mind quickly)
