Decent products ruined by a horrible sample package
As a preface: before I wrote this review I’ve used each scent in this package over the course of about 2 weeks total. I have a beard that’s fairly short compared to others at about half an inch to an inch long.A review of the products themselves:The beard oil is simple and effective. Rather than throwing a kitchen sink of weird things in that you might not want on your face, It only has a few ingredients, all of which are known to soften, nurture, and help a beard. It left my beard soft and smooth without feeling oily. Most of the scents linger for a decent amount of time.The beard butter was almost like a lotion, rather than being a soft paste of sorts like others I’ve used. There was no wax, and it contains almost the same ingredients as the oil does. The scents of each matched the oils almost exactly as a result. This also means that there’s very little hold. Note that the butter DOES contain straight coconut oil as one of its primary ingredients, which is comedogenic. I have acne prone and sensitive skin, and I did experience breakouts under my beard while using this. If you have normal skin that isn’t prone to acne, you’d probably like the butter.The beard wash and conditioner acted as advertised. I didn’t really notice a change in my beard as I used them. The scents were there, but didn’t linger long out of the shower.Smell preference is subjective to each person, but here’s my review of the included scents:Tombstone: Easily my number 1. It goes on smelling strong of sweet tobacco as advertised. The scent slowly gives way to sweet cedar and faintly lingering tobacco. My wife described it faintly as a christmas tree. I found this scent lasted the longest overall.1880: I liked it at first, but over a few days I came to feel like it had a weird upfront, slightly reminiscent of citrus and bitters, but with a strange spice I couldn’t place. I couldn’t smell any hint of bourbon in there. Over the day it gave way to an almost baby powder type of scent. It lasted a good while in beard. It was okay.Canyon: It immediately smelled like a musky Home Depot lumber yard that’s been in heavy rain. My wife picked up bitter basil. It wasn’t great. I generally love the smell of woods and lumber, but this wasn’t good.American: Immediately Christmas. Holiday candles. My wife said it smelled like church, which made total sense once she said it. Not digging it.Executive: Leather top notes, as advertised. It almost has a slight cologne smell to it too. If this was straight up just vanilla and cedar it may have been better for me. No go.Legend: Soap. I got lavender-ish immediately, not the advertised sandalwood or vanilla. It almost smelled like grandma’s bathroom with those tiny little seashell shaped soaps she’d have out on display that you weren’t allowed to use. Also a no go.As for the packaging… here’s where the entire thing really falls apart. I’m not sure who decided that these tear away ‘single use’ packets were a good idea, but that person needs to be smacked upside the head.The oil and beard butter included in each packet was too much to be used just one time, even if you have a longer beard. When you get enough out and then save some for later, the oil packets make a mess all over your countertop unless you’re careful to put them on something and wipe away the excess that’s dribbled out. Trying to get a little bit out is next to impossible, as you have to squeeze the packet in just the right way so it doesn’t explode out into your hand with way too much product.The packets in the shower are impossible to open, as you’re trying to tear them open with wet hands. I learned to open them up before starting the shower.The comb included is nice, but I have no idea what the second gift is used for. Is it a bag tag? A keychain? I’m not sure what it’s meant for.This sample package would benefit from an overhaul, switching to drams and bottles rather than packets.TLDR: Beard oil is good. Tombstone is scent great to me. Beard butter is nice if you don’t have acne. Shampoo and Conditioner do their jobs. The gifts are pointless. The overall packaging for this sample pack is beyond awful.
