And man, has this new Rode VideoMicro II been a revelation!Straight out the gate, the value. ð¸ The audio clarity has taken a notch up from the original – and thatâs saying something because the OG VideoMicro was already pretty darn good. But for someone like me, the II just feels like it’s been tuned to perfection. It’s got this delightful crispness to the audio that makes your content sound that much more professional.Now, don’t get me wrong. The big wide world of microphones is vast, with some mics that have price tags as impressive as their specs. But for the run and gun shooters among us, who prioritize efficient, high-quality, no-fuss gear? This mic is the sweet spot. Great mic but shock mount causes audible turbulence
I use this mic on my Sony ZV-E10 every day. I also have the Rode NT-1 studio condenser mic, but my students say the VideoMicro II is clearer and so it’s easier for them to hear my voice. I suspect this is due to it having strong response in the mids (where the voice resides) and less in the higher and lower ranges. (It’s probably also better when played back on the students’ laptop speakers or cheap earphones, which probably also lack highs and lows.) So, for this purpose, it works perfectly.However, it’s not so good outdoors.Sometimes I record students outdoors for promotional videos. The included wind protection options are great, but after some testing I discovered that there is excessive wind noise when the wind comes from the side or back. This is due to the flat, ribbon-like shape of the shock mount. If you cover this area on the rear of the mic (and it would probably help to cover the cable too), you can blast it with powerful wind and it stays silent (as confirmed by my tests in a controlled environment).Recommended for indoor use only, or outdoors if you don’t mind rigging up an extra cover for the shock mount to supplement the benefits of the fluffy wind shield.It’s also highly directional, which is good if you want to somewhat isolate one speaker in a noisy location. I often mount it on a pole with a long cable and use it like a field reporter. Works perfectly and sounds great when you get closer to the interviewee (and without having to stick the camera right in their face).

I was looking for a shotgun microphone to use on my Sony a6700 for videography, and after doing some research looking at various models from Sony, RODE, and Sennheiser, the VideoMicro II was the one I ended up choosing. I was also looking at the original VideoMicro, but since it’s 2024, I thought I’d go with the newer model. I didn’t wanna spend a fortune on a high-end shotgun mic, so this one was the prime picking for me.So far, after a few uses, the VideoMicro II hasn’t disappointed one bit. The plug-and-play style of setup makes everything super simple, and the audio quality that has come out of it is top notch. I was able to film events and performances with no issues. Inside the packaging, it comes with a deadcat wind muff, a foam wind muff, a TRS to TRS cable for cameras and camcorders, and a TRS to TRRS cable for smartphones. It comes with everything you need to get started in using the mic, including a cold-shoe mount for cameras.Overall, I’m very impressed with the VideoMicro II, and I’d definitely recommend it (especially when it’s on sale!) I will definitely be keeping an eye out for future products from RODE.
