It’s a process, but it works for dry climates. High desert living!
Tis the season to be seeding, therefore, I am going to write my review early to give some tips of advice. So, I live in a very interesting climate. I’m in a transition zone of 5b, 7000 ft in elevation, high desert. Relative humidity usually around 15% this time of year. Please excuse my progress as my yard is in landscape mode for the 2021 upcoming season. So, I decided to do half of my yard (thus starting the process a tad earlier, seeded Aug 15th) and then will complete the second half beginning Labor Day weekend. I did this for a few reasons.1. I only had enough chicken wire to rope off half the yard to keep my dogs off of it2. I only had enough row cloth to cover half of the area at a time. (I’ll get to that later)3. I try to conserve water (less area to concentrate on at a time)So, my advice for people who live in climates like mine:First off, it was hotter than it was suppose to be. Highs were about 85 when I started and then we had several 90-93 degrees day (lows in the 50’s)! That made me nervous but just had to water more than I wanted to.Prep, prep prep!!First, though all I had was weeds, I killed them all off about a week before seeding (only had to wait 3 days but planned it out so did it way earlier).Second, raked up all the thatch and dead weeds.Third, put down about 12 bags of good top soil for the first half. (Peet and sheep is a great choice too!) raked it of for good cover on my desert dirt.Fourth, well, spread the seed for new lawn.Fifth, gave a light raking to gently cover the seed, not bury it!Sixth, covered with a row cloth. You can buy them at your local nursery by the foot or here very reasonably on Amazon! I bought mine on amazon and have reused it for several seeding projects. The row cloth lets the light in and the moisture through when you water. It keeps those beautiful blue seeds moist after watering and safe from the birds. Pin that cloth down! Also, if you can’t find row cloth you can also purchase rolls of burlap. Burlap works well too, just make sure not to pull out the seedlings when you remove it.Then I put chicken wire up (cause I already had it) just to keep the pups off until the seedlings are strong. Then water. I watered once in the morning, once about noon and once more in the evening. The pic I posted (of actual grass) is from day 17 after planting. I uncovered to see my progress and then went ahead and pinned down the row cloth for another week (I’ll uncover again Labor Day weekend) until I start the process again on the other half of my lawn.Day 19 today, it thickening up nicely! By this next spring I should have a nice lush stand of grass! Remember, patience……So basically, if you put the work into it, you’ll have grass too!!! If you want an instant lawn, perhaps you should look at sod instead. Seeding is so rewarding but it definitely requires patience. Hopefully this review helps someone. As you can see I literally started from nothing! If I can do it, so can you!Good luck and happy seeding season!*****Update 10/1/20*****Seeded second half 21 days ago. The seedlings haven’t germinated as quickly as the first half. Only thing I did differently is used peat n sheep instead of top soil because my local Ace was out of top soil. The temps have been cooler and I think the seed has been more moist with the cooler temps and the different dressing. I uncovered, added some seeds to the bare spots and will continue watering uncovered. Looks promising just taking longer than the other side did. Patience. Daytime highs around 80 lows in upper 30’s to 40’s. No rain in sight.

By mid May the results paid off with no weeds and a golf course like appearance. Germination is slow
Mid July in Minnesota climate. I decided to completely reseed my existing lawn by using a grass and weed killer to kill my existing lawn . I sprayed first week of July. Two weeks later rented a sod cutter to completely remove the grass and tilled the soil. By August first I used Scotts Heat Tolerant seed with some 10-10-10 starter fertilizer.. I applied seed and gently raked it into the soil . I watered it using my irrigation system 3X a day for short periods to keep the seed wet. I did not use any commercialized cover to keep the seed from drying out. By the end of the growing season ( end of Sept) only 50% germination. Over the winter I was concerned my hard work was no going to show my results. In April the lawn showed some improvement, but my Mid May, the reseeded lawn was completely covered with a lush green carpet of grass and no weeds. I did not apply a pre emergent crab grass fertilizer as that would kill any seed that had not germinated . By mid May the results paid off with no weeds and a golf course like appearance. Germination is slow. For a new lawn, I spent $50 on this bag of seed, $25 for grass killer, rented a sod cutter to remove the dead grass, and own my own tiller. For less than $150 and the cost of watering, I have 5000 sq foot front lawn vs $1000 of high maintenance sod that requires constant watering, fertilizer and herbicides. My hope is the product which says is heat tolerant fescue (no bluegrass which I do not want) so I do not need to water in the July and August saving $ on irrigation and maintenance. If you live in Minnesota, this seed is hardy to withstand the winter and although not bluegrass, it looks like bluegrass and no one will know by looking at it or walking on it.

    Here’s Hoping
We had previously purchased and used this seed to overseed our backyard and had fairly good luck with it.This time the seed that we bought on 03/10 has a sell by date of 02/28!?!?So, here is hoping that this seed is still good enough to seed bare ground where we had a tree and some old bird berry shrubbery removed.Fingers Crossed

lets be clear, its so much better than what my boss used on her lawn!
so i got results of the grass growing in like 5 to 6 days, and like 8 days in almost all the seeds have sprouts. To be honest, with the way i had to fight the stuff to grow that my boss had bought, i expected to fight this as well. Nope! So, i did till my entire area that i was seeding, and using scotts elite spreader, the seed didnt go far even with 16 pound bags. However, I tilled the yard prior, and then racked all the grass and weeds out that i could and respread the dirt as levvel as i could by hand. this was a rough time, and hard work to be sure! then i spread the seeds on the setting on the bag, which was really high, but i didnt care because i really wanted this grass to thrive. then i water like 3 or 4 times a day with a lawn sprinkler. I feel like this is what most people get wrong. It doesnt require deep watering, your just got to try and keep the very top where the seeds are moist. if u water too much, or too little, its kinda pointless. the instrustuctions clear state to keep the soil layer moist. And no, i didnt pre germinate the seeds either. and i am glad i didnt. temps during this past week have been down to 36 one morning, but mostly 50 to 90 degrees. oh, one more thing i did three days after spreading the seed was to spread scotts starter seed fertilizer. i believ the bag said i could use once a week. It’s been alot of work, and alot of tlc, but anyone could do these things

    100% dead seed
100% dead on arrival. Mixed this with clover seed, spread, covered with topsoil, and watered consistently. Clover sprouted great, but exactly zero grass sprouted. Never had a problem sprouting grass before, including with this exact product. But this bag was obviously exposed to something that killed all the deed. Perhaps high temps during shipping? Anyway, I won’t ever order seed from Amazon again.
