Great Sleeping Pad on a Budget
I purchased this sleeping pad back in 2022 and have now used it on many camping trips across all seasons. It is a great piece of gear, and has been durable as well as comfortable. Takes a few minutes to inflate but I set up other stuff around camp while it’s filling. You can top off with a few breaths if you want firmer sleep. Packing is also simple.My most recent trip was car camping, and the tent site was quite rocky. The Gear Doctor pad really helped sitting on tent floor and tarp. Plus, it was unseasonably chilly and the pad kept me nice and warm under my sleeping bag. I am 6 ft, 180lbs, and it’s plenty big. I tend to leave it slightly under inflated so it won’t slide and is a bit more comfortable. It’s been stomped on, tossed around, stuff dropped on it, and never any issues.It’s extremely light, but a little bulky for REALLY ultra-light backpacking. Takes up a decent portion of my 40 liter pack. That said, it works great and beats sleeping on the ground or the thin “yoga mat” style pads.I’ve been very happy with the Gear Doctors sleeping pad long-term and feel good knowing it has a lifetime warranty. If you’re considering it, go for it.

Fantastic…with a poor valve system.
UPDATED REVIEW! 01/12/25Immediately after receiving and testing the mat and finding flaws, i reached out to Gear Doctors via email. I explained the issues i was finding and included the pictures from my review.They were very quick to reply to me and provided excellent service. Without asked they offered to warranty the mat immediately. Communication with them was easy and fast. I did find it interesting they only replied to me at night though; I was receiving their emails at 11:30 pm central time.Once I received my replacement I immediately tested to see if the issues remained. They both did and did not. I no longer felt air leaking from the valve. I was not able to duplicate the red valve flap catching any more either. BUT, the issue with the sensitivity of the valve leaking if touched remains. Now, will i be touching the valve in my sleep? No. The outer cap will prevent that. But, the valve will leak if touched. I have added a new video of my tapping the valve and you can hear the air flow.Over all, the mat is great. Great comfort and size along with fantastic follow up service. The valve system needs to be re-evaluated.Ps, their service level and willingness to warranty the mat without me even asking to earned them an extra star.————————————————————————This review is for the Gear Doctors Artemis mat. I purchased this pad with the intention of using it for cold weather camping. I was attracted to the stated R rating, the thickness, and the memory foam. (And the price haha)I decided to test the pad immediately as i was very excited for it. I gathered my cold weather gear and headed outside.My first test was in 53 degree weather, clear skies, and windy. The first thing i noticed while trying to pump the mat up with the air bag was the bag does NOT want to stay connected to the mat. At all. I fought and fought the bag to get just 3 or 4 full pumps in. I finally came up with a little system to be able to get good air flowing in. In my opinion, customers shouldn’t have to be creative just to get a product to work as intended.After finally getting the mat pumped up i put my hand on it to get a feel of the temp inside. It felt VERY cool to the touch from the 53 degree air. After laying down i was pleasantly surprised how quickly the mat warmed up. There was nothing to alert me there was 53 degree air in there. I was completely comfortable. You will need to test and adjust the amount of air to fit your personal comfort.My second test was the next morning. After a cold front moved in the temperature dropped 10 degrees so i was able to test the bed in 24 degree air. Pumping up the mat in 24 degree wind was…frustrating. I was cold and again fighting the pump bag. But i got it. I felt the mat agin and it was freezing to the touch. The idea of laying on 24 degree air wasn’t appealing but, just like the first test, the mat warmed up and i had NO clue there was 24 degree air in there. They boast a very high R value. While i cannot speak to the number itself since i would have no way to test that, i can confirm that in 24 degree weather i was perfectly comfortable. I am beyond happy with the R value. I tested the mat for an hour and the mat was warm almost immediately after laying down. Great!The major challenges I experienced with the mat were 1) the bag not staying in the port, 2) the air flow valve is not a quality product, the mat is INCREDIBLY HARD to roll up.1) As mentioned earlier, the blow up bag does not want to stay connected. If i looked at it wrong while pumping, it disconnected.2) The directional air valve seals very poorly. There are two settings, in and out. The red flap of the out side flops out very easily. It WILL get caught when you turn the dial. Its basically just a little red flap thats attached by a small piece in the middle. The valve leaks air very easily. You can feel it with your hand. The ONLY thing keeping the air in is the outer cap. My worry is that, after a few fill ups, the outer cap will begin to breakdown and it will not stop the flow.3) The mat is INSANELY hard to roll up. If you have ANY form of arthritis in your hands/wrists or have a weak grip strength this product is NOT for you.Over all, the mat is a great size. Im 6’2 and i fit perfectly. The mat preforms fantastically once you figure out how to blow it up. (I might be investing in a portable mini air pump for other mats). The mat helps keep you warm. I was VERY impressed with that. You will struggle rolling it up. The valve is…garbage. I plan on reaching out directly to inquire about this with Gear Doctors.

I ordered two of the XL mats, one for me and one for my girlfriend as the larger one was cheaper at the time. I was a little skeptical at first, due to how much cheaper it is than the competitors in the market. Amazingly enough, these mats are incredibly comfortable and compact. Before this I was using a 2 inch thick self inflating mat from Canadian tire, and this one is infinitely more comfortable for a lower cost. The 4 inch thick pad creates a great barrier from the ground and we had no issues sleeping on an area with lots of smaller rocks that could be uncomfortable for a thinner mat. It feels durable and does not make a lot of noise while rolling around at night. The included dry bag that doubles as an airpump is a fantastic alternative to blowing up the mat with your mouth, as it avoids the introduction of moisture into the mat and prolongs the life of it by avoiding the possibility of mold. You can also use the dry bag as a liner inside a hiking backpack. The only negative thing I can even think of is that it can be a bit tricky to slightly deflate it when adjusting firmness. It is much easier if you use the plastic pick that comes with it, but other brands have slightly better designs. This is not enough of a problem to warrant 4 stars as the quality and compactness is amazing for the price.
